Hiya, folks. I’m Jacob Gordon, the founder of Nemonics Media. My company is just about to release the first version of our first product. It’s called QuoteTh.is, and it’s all about making it easy to share quotations. This first post tells a bit about the product and why you might love using it.
I recently had to give a “one line” description. Here’s what I wrote:
QuoteTh.is is an application that increases reader engagement by making it easy to share quotations from webpages, ebooks, and PDFs with sites like Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.
We’re fanatical about this notion of reading becoming more social via the web. QuoteTh.is is a web app that does in one click what we’ve probably all done at one time or another: cut a quotation, pasted it in Twitter or Facebook, added the link (maybe using bitly to shorten it), and shared it with our networks. That’s all great, but it can be easier. QuoteTh.is can post a quote to all your social networks with two clicks.
It works in two basic ways: pre-selected quotes and the QuoteTh.is bookmarklet.
Pre-selected quotes: Imagine reading an online article or an ebook and finding that key quotations are highlighted. These are the real pithy, notable, quotable sentences. Selecting this pre-highlighted sentence opens a slick little interface that lets you publish it to Twitter, Facebook, and your Tumblr blog. (Of course when it shows up on any of those sites there is a nice link back to the source, so your friends and followers can read it.) Then you’re taken right back to what you were reading.
The bookmarklet: We’re also building a bookmarklet that you can easily drop into your browser’s bookmark bar. Now you can highlight any bit of text you encounter on the web, click the QuoteTh.is bookmarklet, and instantly publish it to Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr (with more services to come).
The main difference between these two functions is who chooses the quotes. When quotes are pre-selected, it’s the author or publisher who decides. With the bookmarklet, it’s the user who decides.
There’s plenty more to talk about, but that’s enough for now. If you’re interested in QuoteTh.is or social reading in general, please shoot me an email: Jacob “at” NemonicsMedia.com
